Who We Are

We are people living in Burgess Hill and the surrounding area who are on a journey with Jesus. We have services and events, programmes and facilities, but at the heart it’s all about relationships. At the centre of the Christian faith is God who already is in relationship: Father, Son and Spirit. He has made us so that we can enter into the joy and love, the mystery and magnificence of this relationship – with God and with other people.

We are down to earth, ordinary people who are seeking to live with a growing awareness and experience of life, meaning, purpose that is more than mundane. We have discovered that knowing Jesus is life-changing and want others to know how great this can be. Hence our strapline: Knowing Jesus and making him known.

Gateway is large enough to include people of all stages of life, families and singles, with a variety of life experiences and cultural backgrounds, but small enough to get to know people personally.

What We Believe

Creation

The earth, the universe and all things, were created by the one true God, who has always existed and who will always exist and that God has revealed himself to all mankind through what has been created.

The Bible

God has revealed himself further by causing and inspiring the Bible to be written in order that all men and women can know about him. The Bible records many of God’s actions and words in order that we can understand our relationship to him and how he expects us to live.

God's relationship with us

The Bible reveals that God created mankind in order to have an intimate and loving relationship with us but we have all chosen to turn away from him and in so doing have broken this relationship.

God has done everything necessary to restore this relationship. He has come to earth in the person of his Son, Jesus, being born to a virgin and living as a man, who was tempted as we are but who, unlike us, chose not to sin. Fully human and fully God, he died on a cross as a substitute for us, taking upon himself the punishment for our sin.

Resurrection and Reconciliation

Jesus was raised back to life, and was seen by his followers, after which he ascended into heaven in bodily form. His sacrificial death has paid the price for our sin so that all people can be reconciled to God and know and experience his loving kindness by acknowledging our sinfulness, by turning back to him, by recognising what Jesus has done on our behalf and by genuinely asking for his forgiveness and that there is no other way to a restored relationship with God.

The Holy Trinity

God has revealed himself as one God in three persons: God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and that Holy Spirit God comes to live within those who believe and have accepted him.

A Flavour of Church Life

Browse the website to explore different aspects of what we do, and nothing can beat coming along, seeing for yourself, getting to know us and asking questions, but here are some examples of Gateway over recent months.

Encountering God’s Presence

Something we seek to do as we live our lives, as we meet together and as we worship on Sunday. A special experience of this was our church weekend at the Steyning Centre.

‘The Greatest Story Ever Told’

This is a new, bestselling book by Bear Grylls and the basis for a couple of groups meeting in homes over the Autumn to explore, book club style, this retelling of the life of Jesus.

Delving into the Old Testament

We were challenged over the summer to read a significant book of the Bible itself, ‘Isaiah’. This was supplemented by weekly teaching on Sundays. Even though this part of the Bible was written hundreds of years before Jesus was born, it forms a backdrop to his life, identity and purpose.

There is more to explore on the way to Christmas.

Creativity

Some people in the church have enjoyed exploring art and creative writing, both appreciating it and creating it. The overflow of this, and musical ability from within our church family and beyond has also enriched our worship.

Table Tennis

This started as an idea for an Autumn course, but with a professional coach, five tables, some keen players of all ages from under 7 to over 70 and a weekly slot on Monday evenings, this is an open club that we run in our premises that keeps joyfully welcoming new participants of all abilities.

LEADERSHIP

Our Leadership Team

The Elders’ function is to exercise spiritual and pastoral oversight. In the New Testament there is the recognition that these should be Christian men of mature faith who are set apart to supervise the work of the church.

Here at Gateway we apply the name Deacon to the members of our team of men and women who are set apart by the Church Family to be the practical executors of the church’s vision.

Steve Hobbis

Pastor

Surprised, changed, and delighted by God: A former electronics and communications systems engineer who didn’t have a place for God has for the last thirty-plus years, been following Jesus and encouraging others to seek, know, love, and serve him together in real community as a response to the truth, love, and power of God.

Steve and his wife Clare have two boys in their twenties. After 23 years as minister in South Oxhey, near Watford, Steve, Clare came to Gateway at the very beginning of 2021.

David Salisbury

Church Elder

David has served as a youth leader, a home group leader and as deacon. He was appointed to the eldership in March 2018.

David has a heart for discipleship – to help and encourage Christians, young and old (in all senses!), to constant growth. He and his wife, Carol, served with Youth With A Mission, helping to establish a new work in Ireland and then at the training base at Holmsted Manor, Staplefield, until 1992. Coming then to Burgess Hill, God led them, very clearly, to GBC.

...

Tim Coffey

Church Secretary

Tim has previously served GBC in the role of Treasurer and as an Elder. In early 2024, he was appointed as our Church Secretary and as Deacon for Administration.

Tim, Claire and their baby son, Daniel, moved to Burgess Hill in 1999, relocating from the West coast of Scotland. GBC was the first church they attended in this area and the welcome they received, along with the support they have enjoyed over the years, has meant that they continue to see GBC as their spiritual home.

...

Alan Partridge

Finance and Youth

Alan became a member in March 2010 and was appointed Treasurer at Gateway Baptist Church in October 2024.

Since joining the church, he has been involved in the Children and Youth work and, for several years, led one of the Life Groups. He also serves on the Fish & Bricks management committee.

...

Carol Lindsay

Social Action

Carol left home at 18 to train, under the ‘apprenticeship’ model, to be a nurse. Over the years she has nursed in plastic (reconstructive) surgery, burns and then in the community with an increasing role in palliative care.

She moved to Burgess Hill in 1994 with her family but later had to adjust to life as a single parent.  She was not a stranger to the church and Christianity but, through conversations in the early 2000’s, discovered there is a great deal more to Jesus than she formerly thought.

...

Nicola Cooper

Children

After a period teaching in Egypt, Nicola returned to West Sussex and started attending GBC in the summer of 2002.

Nicola worked for a while at the Fish & Bricks Preschool but now works at one of the local primary schools.

...

Crispin Rogers

Special Projects

As Deacon for Special Projects, Crispin gets involved in many aspects of church life, sometimes heading up management of events and courses, sometimes coming alongside others doing so.  His training and experience bring some special talents and skills to our work at GBC.

Crispin came to Burgess Hill in 1988 after studying Modern History at Oxford and marrying Janie. He enjoyed a career in marketing, including spending 3 years in Cape Town, South Africa, where they attended a Church of England in South Africa congregation and developed a deeper relationship with God.
